Institut Molekularbiologie und Angewandte Oekologie

EMI, Aachen

Within the working group “Helmholtz-Institut für Biomedizinische Technik” of RWTH Aachen University, the Institute of Applied Medical Engineering combines conventional medical engineering with natural sciences, and especially with biosciences.

At EMI (Experimental Medicine and Immunotherapy), molecular biology, protein expression and antibody technologies are used to generate novel antibodies against clinically-relevant target structures including both cells and specific markers of disease. The genetic information of the selected antibodies is used to generate recombinant derivatives, which can immediately be used for directed immobilization or labeling with whatever probe. Biological activities of the recombinant proteins are characterized in vitro (ELISA, flow cytometry, fluorescence and confocal microscopy, Biacore analysis, immunohistochemistry) and in vivo (different human disease models in rodents).
